How to Setup an Intranet Site - the Whole Idea
How do you set up an Intranet Site?
*First:
You need to have a server. The server needs to have web server software such as Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS).
*Second:
Decide what you want the Intranet to do, what sort of functions it will offer.
*Third:
Decide what the Intranet pages will look like.
*Fourth:
Create web pages to display content to the end users.
OK you're all set! Ah, some questions remain:
Where should the server be? What are some of the things an Intranet can do? How do I design the look and feel of the Intranet? How do I build and manage content? How do I keep the content up to date? Who does what? How do we access documents? How do we find stuff? We will answer some of these questions here, and throughout this web site, or feel free to

Hosting the Intranet Site - Where does the server live?
There are two main options for hosting the Intranet content - installing it on an internal server or hosting it at a third party location. In making this decision
you should consider convenience, security and cost.
*
Convenience
- hosted internally just link to documents in place; hosted externally you have to move documents to the external server and maintain them there.
*
Security
-hosted internally your Intranet content and documents are all within your firewall, controlled by your network. Hosted externally - well who knows?
*
Cost
- hosted internally you pay a one time fee for a tool to help build and maintain your Intranet or you can pay forever for off site hosting.
As you can tell, we believe that hosting your Intranet onsite, on your own server, is the way to go and we think the facts support that approach!
How Do I Build and Maintain Content?
To build content for display in an Intranet site
-
*
You
can write HTML code
that incorporates the content for each page (that sounds pretty hard and it is!).
*
You can
use an HTML editor tool like FrontPageT
- that is much easier, but it still requires fairly solid expertise -only those folks with that expertise can add and maintain Intranet content.
*You can
use a more complete and complex, tool like Cold FusionT
or an Intranet tool that uses Cold Fusion. More complete sounds good, but complex means a lot to learn and hard to maintain.
The approach we recommend is Instant Intranet Builder
T
(IIB
T
) - a tool that has done all of the code writing and complex parts for you!
*With IIB content is added by simply filling in the blanks. Documents are published by browsing to them and clicking.
*IIB uses open architecture and standard tools to save and access your data - not closed proprietary coding!
While IIB is simple to use, you can build a rich, fully functional Intranet! While you are here at our site check out the many features supported in IIB!
